When do I need to move out?
You must move out by your closing date. On closing day, ownership of the home transfers to Opendoor, so all of your personal belongings need to be out of the property before that happens.
Where to find your closing date
Your closing date is shown on your dashboard at opendoor.com. If you're unsure of the exact date, reach out to your Home Sale Advisor for confirmation.
What if I need more time?
Move-out photos must be submitted and approved on your dashboard in order for closing to proceed.
If your closing date is approaching and you're not ready to move out, you can request late checkout (also called post-close occupancy), which lets you stay up to 17 days after closing. It requires a security deposit and a daily rate, arranged before closing. See our late checkout article for setup details.
Plan ahead
Moving takes longer than most people expect. Here's how to stay on track:
- Start packing early — at least two to three weeks before your closing date.
- Schedule movers well in advance — especially during busy seasons (summer, end of month), availability fills up fast.
- Remove all personal property and belongings from the home. This includes any moving pods or dumpsters, and all bulk trash must be picked up — nothing left at the curb.
- Submit your move-out photos on your dashboard. Your photos must include everything listed in the requirements on your dashboard. Be sure to:
- Show that the inside of any garages and sheds is completely empty.
- Keep keys or access instructions clearly visible in the photos.
- If you didn't receive a lockbox, include a photo showing the location of the keys — or the access instructions, if there are no keys.
- Review the pre-closing checklist to make sure you haven't missed anything before handing over the keys.
Tip: Set a personal deadline to be fully moved out one to two days before closing. This gives you a buffer in case anything comes up on moving day.
