Is this Opendoor home for rent? How to spot rental scams

Warning: Opendoor never rents homes. Any rental listing for an Opendoor-owned property is fraudulent. Do not send money.

If you found a rental listing for a property that looks like it belongs to Opendoor, we understand your concern. The short answer is: Opendoor does not rent homes. Period. If someone is advertising an Opendoor-owned property for rent, it is a scam.

Scammers steal photos, descriptions, and addresses from real Opendoor for-sale listings and repost them as fake rental ads on Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace, Zillow, and other platforms. These listings can look convincing, but they are not real.

How to spot a rental scam

Watch for these red flags:

  1. The rent seems too good to be true for the neighborhood or area.
  2. The "landlord" asks for payment via wire transfer, cash, Zelle, Venmo, or cryptocurrency. Legitimate landlords typically accept checks or standard payment methods with a paper trail.
  3. You never meet the landlord in person. They may claim to be out of town, overseas, or otherwise unavailable.
  4. They offer to leave keys in a lockbox so you can move in without meeting anyone.
  5. They pressure you to pay quickly, often claiming other applicants are interested.

How to verify a listing

Search the property address at opendoor.com/homes. If the property appears there as a home for sale, any rental listing for that same address is fraudulent.

You can also call us directly at 888-352-7075 and we will confirm whether the property is one of ours.

If you find a fake listing

Report it immediately. Flag the listing on the platform where you found it, and contact Opendoor so we can take action. The faster fraudulent listings are reported, the fewer people are affected.

Do not send any money, share personal financial information, or sign any documents related to a suspected scam listing.
