Can I make an offer on a pending Opendoor home?
Check the listing status first. If a home shows "pending" or "contingent," another buyer is already under contract, but that does not always mean the home is off the table.
What "pending" means
A pending status means Opendoor has accepted an offer from another buyer and the home is under contract. In most cases, pending homes are no longer accepting new offers. The current buyer is working through their closing process.
What "contingent" means
A contingent status means the home is under contract, but the deal has conditions (contingencies) that still need to be met. Common contingencies include:
- Inspection contingency — the buyer can back out if the inspection reveals significant issues.
- Financing contingency — the deal depends on the buyer securing their mortgage.
- Appraisal contingency — the sale is contingent on the home appraising at or above the agreed price.
If any of these contingencies are not satisfied, the deal could fall through and the home may come back on the market.
Can I submit a backup offer?
In some cases, Opendoor may accept backup offers on pending or contingent properties. A backup offer puts you next in line if the current deal falls apart. Not all listings accept backup offers, so check the listing page or contact us to find out.
Tip: If you submit a backup offer, keep touring other homes. Backup offers are not guaranteed to convert, and you do not want to miss out on other properties while waiting.
How to get notified if a home comes back on market
If you have your eye on a pending property, you can:
- Save the listing on opendoor.com or in the Opendoor app to receive status updates.
- Set up alerts for similar homes in the same area so you are notified when comparable listings become available.
How to check a home's listing status
Visit the property page on opendoor.com. The listing status — active, pending, or contingent — is displayed on the listing. Your real estate agent can also check the status through the MLS.
Note: Once a property is under contract, it may be removed from the Opendoor website. If you can no longer find the listing, the home may already be under contract. Your agent can confirm the current status through the MLS. (Flag for verification: confirm whether pending/contingent properties are removed from the website.)
How do I know if there are competing offers?
Before a home goes to "pending" status, there may be multiple active offers being considered. Opendoor does not publicly disclose the number of active offers on a property, but you can:
- Ask your agent to inquire — your buyer's agent can contact the listing agent to ask whether there are competing offers.
- Move quickly if you are interested — in a competitive market, submitting a strong offer promptly gives you the best chance.
Note: (Flag for confirmation: verify whether buyers can actually see pending offers or notes about multiple offers on the listing page.)
Tip: If the listing mentions a "best and final" deadline, this usually means multiple offers have been received and the seller is reviewing them all at once.
