What about my utilities?
Transfer your utilities out of your name 3 days after your last day in the property. Do not cancel them. Opendoor needs active utility service for home maintenance and resale, so a transfer keeps service running without interruption.
Which utilities to transfer
- Electric
- Gas
- Water and sewer
- Trash collection
- Internet and cable
How to transfer
- Call each utility provider one to two weeks before your closing date.
- Request a transfer (not a cancellation) and give them 3 days after your last day in the property as the transfer date.
- Confirm the transfer is scheduled and ask about any final bills or deposits owed to you.
That's it. You don't need to set up new service in Opendoor's name — just transfer the account out of yours.
What about final bills?
You are responsible for utility charges until your move-out date. Any charges after closing are Opendoor's responsibility. Most providers will send you a final bill based on your transfer date, or apply a credit to your account if you've prepaid.
If you arranged late checkout
If you're staying in the home after closing through a late checkout agreement, keep utilities in your name until your actual move-out date, not your closing date. You are responsible for utility costs during the entire time you occupy the home.
Once you move out, contact your providers to transfer service as of your move-out date.
Tip: Start contacting your utility providers one to two weeks before closing to schedule transfers. Some providers need several business days to process the change.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Do not cancel utilities outright. Cancellation can result in service disconnection, which creates problems for the property. Always transfer.
- Do not forget about smaller accounts like trash, sewer, or HOA-managed services. These are easy to overlook.
