What about my utilities?

Schedule your utilities to shut off three days after your closing date. Keep them in your name through closing, then set the disconnection for three days later. You don't need to transfer anything into Opendoor's name — Opendoor sets up its own service after closing, and the three-day buffer makes sure the home is never without utilities during the handoff.

Don't try to transfer service to Opendoor. Many sellers call their provider to "transfer" the account to the new owner and get stuck, because the new owner has to set up their own service. Just schedule your own shut-off instead.

Which utilities to schedule for shut-off

  • Electric
  • Gas
  • Water and sewer
  • Trash collection
  • Internet and cable

How to schedule your shut-off

  1. Call each utility provider one to two weeks before your closing date.
  2. Ask them to schedule a shut-off (disconnection) for three days after your closing date — not your closing day. This short buffer gives Opendoor time to start its own service so the home is never without power, water, or gas.
  3. Confirm the shut-off date is scheduled and ask about any final bills, refunds, or deposits owed to you.

Important: Make sure you actually schedule a shut-off date. If you simply stop using the service without scheduling a disconnection, the provider can keep billing you while the account is still in your name.

What about final bills?

You are responsible for utility charges while the account is in your name. Most providers send a final bill based on your shut-off date, or apply a credit if you've prepaid. If you have questions about charges after your move-out date, contact support.

If you arranged late checkout

If you're staying in the home after closing through a late checkout agreement, keep your utilities in your name until your actual move-out date, not your closing date. You are responsible for utility costs for the entire time you occupy the home.

Once you know your move-out date, schedule your shut-off for about three days after you leave, following the same steps above.

Tip: Start contacting your providers one to two weeks before closing. Some need several business days to schedule a disconnection.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Don't shut off utilities on closing day. Schedule the disconnection for three days after closing so there's no gap in service during the handoff to Opendoor.
  • Don't try to transfer the account to Opendoor. Opendoor arranges its own service. Your only job is to schedule your own shut-off.
  • Don't forget smaller accounts like trash, sewer, or internet. These are easy to overlook.
