How do I take self-assessment photos with the Opendoor Key App?

Download the Opendoor Key App from the App Store or Google Play to get started. This is a separate app from the main Opendoor app -- make sure you are downloading the right one.

Step-by-step instructions

  1. Download the Opendoor Key App from the App Store (iPhone) or Google Play (Android). Search for "Opendoor Key" specifically.
  2. Log in with the same email and password you used to request your offer on opendoor.com.
  3. Open your active transaction. You should see your property address on the home screen of the Key App.
  4. Follow the built-in photo guide. The app walks you through room-by-room, showing you exactly what to capture and from which angles.
  5. Photograph every room including bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchen, living areas, closets, garage, and the exterior of your home.
  6. Take close-up photos of any damage or wear -- things like cracked tiles, stained carpet, water marks, or worn countertops. This helps your Opendoor team assess repair costs (condition adjustment) accurately.
  7. Review and submit your photos once you have completed every section in the guide.

Photo requirements and tips

  • Photos must be taken live in the app. You cannot upload photos from your camera roll or use screenshots. The app requires real-time photos only.
  • Hold your phone in landscape orientation (sideways) to capture the widest view of each room.
  • Use natural lighting. Open blinds and curtains, and turn on overhead lights. Avoid taking photos in the dark.
  • Capture the entire room. Stand in the doorway or corner to get as much of the space in frame as possible.

Tip: Plan for 30-60 minutes to complete all your self-assessment photos. Starting when you have good daylight will make a big difference in photo quality.

Troubleshooting common issues

The app crashes or freezes

Force close the Opendoor Key App and reopen it. Your progress is saved automatically, so you should be able to pick up where you left off.

Photos will not upload or are stuck

Check your wifi connection. The Key App needs a stable internet connection to upload photos. Try switching between wifi and cellular data if uploads are stalling.

I cannot find my transaction in the app

Make sure you are in the Opendoor Key App, not the main Opendoor app. These are two different apps. Also verify that you are logged in with the same email address you used on opendoor.com.

Warning: If you are still unable to see your transaction after confirming you are in the correct app and using the right email, contact support -- do not create a new account.

How do I know my photos were received?

After you submit your photos through the Opendoor Key App, you should see a confirmation screen in the app indicating your submission is complete. You will also receive a confirmation email or text from Opendoor.

If you are unsure whether your photos were submitted successfully:

  1. Reopen the Opendoor Key App and check whether the photo submission shows as complete.
  2. Log in to your dashboard at opendoor.com — your status should update to show that the assessment is in progress or that your photos are under review.
  3. If you do not see a confirmation, call 888-352-7075 or email support@opendoor.com to verify.

Tip: Do not retake and resubmit photos unless Opendoor asks you to. If there is an issue with your submission, the team will contact you.
